When Comrades Fall

This blog is designed to talk about media.  I want to take a turn and do something different on this blog for today.  It’s not written about any one person.  To be honest it’s been on my heart for a while.

I’ve been in Christian radio for over 30 years.  I’ve seen a lot of good people come and go.  Some of those folks were fallen comrades, to be very honest I was one of the fallen.  You learn real quick that you can go from HERO TO ZERO in sixty seconds.  Friends stop calling, people walk around you in the supermarket, you enter the black hole of loneliness.  I fell 7 years ago while running ZJAM Youth Ministries, many of you will remember that.  I lost everything because of my sin.  I hurt my family, staff, donors, listeners etc…  I sat alone in a small home, hoping someone would come find me.  No one ever knocked on my door to see how I was doing.  I can tell you 7 years later, I’ve never had a visit from my former church where I was an associate pastor for a number of years.  I’m not writing this so you will feel sorry for me but so you can get insight into the one who has fallen.  I was sorry for my sin, wanted restoration but very few wanted to deal with me and what I was going through.

Galatians 6:1-3 MSG

“…friends. If someone falls into sin, forgivingly restore him, saving your critical comments for yourself. You might be needing forgiveness before the day’s out. Stoop down and reach out to those who are oppressed. Share their burdens, and so complete Christ’s law. If you think you are too good for that, you are badly deceived.”

I’ll be honest with you.  Before my fall, my response to folks who had fallen to sin was, “Well that was pretty stupid, how could they be so dumb.”  They were not dumb nor stupid but deceived by Satan.  Instead of seeking them out, I would brush my hands off and walk away.  I’ll be very, very honest with you, to this day I have leaders in my home town and around the country who still will not talk to me.  Do I feel sorry for myself, not at all.  I feel sorry for them because they have missed the heart of God.  God’s heart is to restore the fallen and to use YOU to be part of that process.  Yes, that might mean you’ll have to jump in the crap that your comrade created but isn’t that what Christ did for you?  He didn’t wait for you to get cleaned up but helped you while you were still living in all of your mistakes, sin and just plain crap.

My goal is to live out this verse and encourage you to do the same.  I try to follow up with those who are in my circle of influence and walk with them to restoration if they’ll allow me too.  No, I don’t approve of their sin but in most cases neither do they.  They just need to know someone still loves them. They need you to show up at their door and just sit and cry with them.  The only difference between them and you is the fact that everyone now knows their secret sin.   Lets not be full of religion.  Lets be willing to get dirty, invest in someones life and be part of the restoration.  Put it on your calendar to call them weekly so you don’t forget, take them to lunch…just be available.

I know what you are thinking, it’s going to be an awkward first call or knock on the door.  Yep, you are right but it’s worth it.  A while back I had a friend who was a leader at a very large church.  Everyone would know the church.  He had fallen do to moral failure.  My first response when I heard of the news was to sit down and cry and by the way, that is exactly what I did.  I knew what he was facing and would face.  I picked up the phone, left him a voicemail and asked for the chance to talk with him.  I simply said, “I don’t know everything that went down and I don’t need too.  I know you are a man of God, you are my friend and I would love to walk with you during this time.”  Recently I was in his area while traveling and we had the chance to get dinner.  He told me the following, “it’s been three years and only three or four people have called me on a regular basis to see how I am doing.”  He said this while crying on the phone.  He is doing great today, not because of me but because God used a group of men willing to take time out of their busy schedules to walk with him.

It’s time to step up!  Perhaps it’s time to shut up and step up.  We all have what it takes.  Can you imagine the difference we would have in our comrades lives if we lived out this verse?  Maybe you know someone that has fallen.  I would encourage you to take action today, right now, like in the next few minutes.  I hope you’ll take the challenge today and in the spirit it’s given.  Let go out and make a difference.

Bill, so well written my friend. What a heart You and I have known each other for approx. 25 years and together we have seen friends fall. It is so true how people love to talk about the person and how they fell. But nobody talks about the solution and how we can help. A person could be their best friend. But if they fall ? No best friend anymore. No out stretched arms, just a tongue flaming with gossip. I know a pastor that is a very good friend. and one day I went to his home to find him laying on the floor weeping. I asked what was wrong as I sat on the floor with him, and he said ” I have no one to be accountable to.” Nobody wants to hear what the pastor struggles with. I have no one to share my guilt of my sin with. Nobody cares. It floored me and I said brother I am here. And we need to be there. Not one of us is above falling. And you think you will never fall? If you think you will never use bad judgment? well …. you have already fallen. Great piece Bill. I remember you sharing this with me awhile back over lunch. Im glad you worked through it my friend. And never hesitate to call my number. I love ya bro.

    Mr. Scott:

I 100% and totally understand..yes, it can be very hurtful that is so much filled with so many other empty emotions.. Personally, my son, we have been on a journey with our son Daniel that only GOD has allowed.. I had reached out so many times with my journal to well name ministries and speakers from TBN/SId Roth’s programs and and no one knew how to respond. But saying this.. GOD has taught me so much and one of the most important. lesson has been to Trust only HIM and DEPEND only on HIM…Which I feel is called. “Intimate Relationship with the ALMIGHTY” …….

This journey is a season.. and feel that I will get to share it personally, cause I feel there are alot more people that are/have gone through what we have, but were just like me.. did not know how to share… and the people of today did not know how to rec’d the message… which is really from GOD..

And yes.. forgiveness, forgiveness, forgiveness, has made a home in my heart.. and yes.. I too have reached out to ones…

Christians crucify the wounded rather than walk through the valley and work to restore. Great article Bill.

    Bill,
I absolutely agree and pray that I will be strong enough if the situation comes to help and humble enough to accept help when I need it. Great article Sir.

    Love ya man

Bill, great piece. Never knew your story, so thanks for telling part it plus your perspective. The Body of Christ overall is still not comfortable enuf in this area to respond effectively as others need them to. Even today we see news about one in our industry who will need someone to come alongside him during his horrible ordeal. I hope there will be someone local who can be there for him.

It is so tragic how we treat our brothers and sisters in Christ who are positions of power (pastors, musical artists, speakers, etc.) When they fall morally, most will judge and sever all ties with that person. Something we shouldn’t do. We become exactly like the world doing this. A popular CCM artist has a divorce, their music is pulled off the shelves and airplay is stopped. Most of these cases, we don’t even know the whole story. We put people like this on a pillar, even to the point of worship. We forget they are fallible like the rest of us.

Wow. What a two by four to the head (and a needed one). You bring up a point I had not considered, you are absolutely right, and I have also been guilty of ignoring the wounded. Lord, forgivee and showe how I can reach out to those on my past I’ve abandoned!

    Bill,
Great article and I know the heart behind it. God is using you my friend to help heal the broken hearted and remind us all to be about the core of the gospel. Jesus told the parable of the lost sheep for situations like these. He LEFT THE 99 to go after the 1 who wandered off.
Blessings and thanks for writing this!

    Hi Bill,
While i was not aware of your issue until this blog post, I totally agree with you in every way. I recently fell into sin myself and am still working through some aspects of it. I was helped to stand again. However now i feel like everyone is just waiting for me to stumble & fall again so they can cast me off and go on there merry way. Thanks again Brother. Blessings!!

I know it’s hard but don’t worry about others. They will see how serious you are in time. It does take time. Stay focused and live in the forgiveness God has given you. Some people are waiting for you to mess up, prove them wrong. You are a good man, keep the faith.

    Bill,
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I know so many others struggle secretly with things, especially those in positions where they are expected to “Be” or “Act” a certain way. My response to this kind of mentality is, “There but by the grace of God go I”. It is so easy for us to find the specks out there and not see our own 2 x 4. This new attitude should never be a license to sin, but rather a chance to live of the great command of Jesus; “‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'”Luke 10:27. Thanks for reminding us that we need each other no matter what we are dealing with in life. May we all be filled with His Spirit enough to look beyond the “‘sinner” and to see the ‘Sin’ for what it is and deal with it accordingly, without destroying the
    person in the process.
